Carsington Water is back with a bang! We sent two anglers to this popular reservoir to find out just how good it is. One will fish lures, the other nymphs… but which will be best?

Carsington Water is under new management and experiencing its best start for many seasons, so we asked two anglers – in the shape of Russ Dyer and John Pass – to team up and pit their fishing skills against one another. John has chosen to use a selection of lures from his website, Flies24-7.com, while Russ is opting for a more imitative approach from his own vast collection of hand-tied nymphs. Cliff Waters has also pitched up to play referee and see fair play.

Living within easy reach of the reservoir, John has a distinct advantage over his distant Cambridgeshire opponent in this battle of the flies. And, never one to shirk an opportunity to gain an advantage, he has given the water a bit of a once-over, by fishing it a couple of times prior to the event. He says: “Last week the reservoir was in fabulous form. We took more than 30 fish to the boat in a four-hour session, mostly on slow-sinking lines and lures.” “That’s as maybe,” retorts Russ. “However, I too have done my homework and over the past few seasons it has become a real buzzer angler’s water with most of the bigger fish, especially early on in the season, falling for a well-presented nymph.”
