Protecting Sea Trout - 05/07/2010

A New leaflet entitled Sea Trout – Protection And Preservation, is the latest concerted effort to save the beleaguered species.

Paul Knight, chief executive of the Salmon & Trout Association (S&TA) explained: “Sea trout are the most important migratory species in many English and Welsh rivers, yet they are increasingly coming under pressure. There are various scientific projects currently under way to help us understand more about the sea trout’s life cycle, but this leaflet shows that anglers, often referred to as the Environment Agency’s (EA) eyes and ears on the riverbank, also have a vital role to play in conservation. Sea trout do not respect national boundaries, and we are delighted to partner our colleagues in the Welsh Salmon and Trout Angling Association (WSTAA), together with the EA, for this important information initiative.”
Produced by the S&TA, EA and WSTAA, the publication explains what a sea trout actually is, the particular problems the species faces, why it requires protection, and the steps that anglers can take to help ensure the future health and abundance of sea-trout populations.

The leaflet is designed to be read both as a hard-copy document for distribution at game fairs and other events, and also as a web document. See www.salmon-trout.org, www.wstaa.org and www.environment-agency.gov.uk.
