Used & Abused: Semperfli Professional Dubbing System - 05/07/2010
Steve Cullen has been having a closer look at a wonderful new dubbing system that could be the answer to fly-tyers’ prayers.
How often can you get excited about a bit of fly-tying kit? Not very I’ll grant you, unless of course you’re taking possession of a top-of-the-range vice. However, I have to say that this new dubbing system – it’s huge, by the way – is one of the best things to come on to the fly-tying market for a very long time!
The thing that takes your breath away is the vast amount of shades that you have to work with. Now, a run-of-the-mill packet of dubbing will set you back around a couple of quid but this system has more than 140 solid colours, so in layman’s terms that’s around £280 worth. And another staggering point to make is the price – you get all the dubbing, in their own sleeves, all coordinated in a ring binder, for less than £100!
To make your life even easier, you even get a colour chart to go with the system. These little waterproof cards are great for taking along to the river or lakeside because you can use them to marry up the hues of the natural insects that you’re trying to copy, make a note, take it home and tie with the relevant shade – it’s brilliant! The dubbing is very fine and it hasn’t been messed around with at all. Nor has it been chopped up, but left nice and long so that you can choose to cut it up to size or use it as a wing or tailing material.
Among this vast selection are natural furs as well as some ‘twinkly’ synthetics, so that you can mix and match to get the look or shade that you’re after. No matter what type of pattern you’re tying, you’ll find a match. Another point worth mentioning is the fact that every colour can be purchased for refills. You also get empty wallets so that you can add your own personal mix, enabling you to come back to it time and again – ingenious!
