There are so many Czech Nymphs out there and it seems that every one you try will work at some time or another on most of our freestone rivers, chalkstreams and, quite often, on stillwaters too. To be honest, it’s no wonder that these fantastic patterns account for so many trout and grayling as they are fished where the fish are – for the majority of the time at least – the riverbed. As the majority of the trout’s food lives in, or on, the bottom of the river or lake these flies will perform very highly.

Original Czech nymphs are ‘thinnish’ patterns; they’re quite slim compared to some of the shop-bought varieties. The additional weight incorporated in these flies obviously determines how deep they fish. There are some flies that are basically just lead, and these are the sacrificial ones, the ones that are tied specifically to get you to the bottom fast.
