Glad to be a fisherman

I had one of those days the other day, one where you look at your life and think, I’m so glad that I’m a fisherman.

A friend and I visited a river for spot of grayling fishing before the season ended, hoping to encounter some rising fish.

The rising fish never happened but we succeeded in catching a very impressive number of fish, this in itself is enough to make me glad I’m an angler but it was the little things that made the day what it was.

Catching lovely grayling in shallow water with little nymphs was only part of it.

Seeing a kingfisher, not once but twice - it may well have been two different birds for all I know, made me smile.
Sitting a having a cup of hot coffee in the weak spring sunshine and shooting the breeze with my mate while, we watched a pair of dippers work the water, made me smile too.

The moment, in the early afternoon, when I was nymphing away and I thought I’d hooked the bottom, only for the ‘bottom’ to slowly move off down stream into deep water, before my line - after being as taut as bowstring for a good five minutes – went slack, it could only have been a barbell, made me smile. Albeit, with a hint of irony.

As I walked through one of the meadows and saw the first flowering daffodil made me smile too. At the end of the day, as we both packed up and my mate turned to me, with a big smile on his face, and said, “That was a great day, wasn’t it Steve?” I smiled and said, “Makes you glad to be a fisherman!”
