My pair of Canon 550D’s have been in meltdown this week. On Friday Dave Hoppe and I returned to Grafham Water, the scene of his Individual International success in 2011. And, what a return it was. I guess the jungle drums have been beating loudly and many readers will already know what happened, especially if you have kept up to date with editor Steve Cullen’s news reports on this website…how pleasant to see a flyfishing magazine and editor with their finger firmly on the button.
I won’t spoil the anticipation by saying too much, as the feature will be appearing in the magazine soon. However, suffice to say David caught a lump. Not your usual 4lb Grafham lump. But the biggest fish of the season caught at the fishery this season so far! Properly silvered, with a full tail definitely not a big stockie. And, it was caught on a Midge Tip and black Buzzer, not a Di7, Booby or Blob in sight.
Saturday saw the WIGFIC (Water Industries Game Fishing International Competition)…they must be going up against Iain Barr for the longest match title of the year with that one. Held at Pitsford Water the match saw 84 anglers representing 14 water industry companies fishing for some rather impressive prizes and trophies. The water level at the fishery is almost up to normal levels and if the pumping continues should be full within weeks…and we still have a hosepipe ban in the Anglia region? Conditions were, to say the least, challenging. The reservoir was split into six sections and with the stiff wind coming from a northerly direction there were few who actually had it easy and the rod average of 0.93 proved that. However, the were some good catches, the pick of them being Northumbrian Water’s Peter Pattinson, who took six rainbows casting a very long line and fishing two flies under an extremely large bung. But the fish of the day was a 9lb rainbow taken by Louis Quartly fishing on section C straight into the wind. Louis backed it up with another smaller fish but I can tell you that was impressive fishing in dire conditions.
One of my personal favourite competitions is on Wednesday, the Bob Church Classic at Rutland Water. Check out my website for the report, result and pictures after the presentation dinner.
