Lake of Menteith Report 24/5/16

James Litster of Kilmaurs with a cracking fish from Gateside Bay on Saturday 21st May – estimated at 12lbs before being returned.

SANACC Scottish Club Championship.

Heat 3 of the 2016 SANACC Scottish Club Championships took place on the evening of Saturday 21st May.

After the rain during the day the evening settled down to reasonable conditions with a light west wind. The fish were to be found feeding near to the surface feeding on buzzers and the occasional Mayfly. Top team on the night was Househillmuir Fly Fishers. The team comprised of Paul O'Neill, Peter Cameron and Stevie Francis caught a total of 21 fish for 43lbs 15.5 ozs. 2nd were Kinross AC "A" who went one place better than their B team last week. The team of Ally Middlemass, Andy Menmuir and Allan Smith landed 12 fish for 23lbs 11.75 ozs. 3rd were Harrow AC "B" who also had 12 fish for 23lbs 11.625ozs. The team comprised William Yuill, Jamie Ferrier and Andrew Ferrier. Top individual was Paul O'Neill with 12 fish for 24lbs 11.75ozs. 2nd - Allan Smith 9 fish for 18lbs 11.25 ozs, 3rd - Jim Tuck 8 fish for 16lbs 7ozs. 4th - Peter Cameron 7 Fish for 14lbs 13.5ozs. 5th - George Murray (snr) 6 fish for 12lbs 9.125ozs.

The top 3 teams go forward to the semi-final on 18th August whilst the top 5 individuals go into the Champion of Champions final. All prizewinners were awarded bottles of beer and whisky donated by the fishery. The top rod on the night caught his fish at Kate's Brae on the floating line with a Candy Floss Booby on the point and buzzers on the droppers. Other areas that produced were The Butts and Tod Hole.

Scottish Fly Fishing Championships

Heat 10 of the SANACC National Flyfishing Championships was held on 19/5/16. The day was mostly wet throughout with light winds. Competitors killed the first 3 fish for weigh-in and then carried out catch and release whereby 2lbs is credited for every returned fish. Top individual on the day was Mark Stephen (picture in middle) of Stewarton AC with 17 fish for a total of 35lbs 10ozs. Mark used a floating line with buzzers at the Heronry.2nd place went to Keith Logan (on left) of North Berwick AC with 15 fish for 29lbs 15ozs. Keith fished a midge tip line with buzzers and blobs at Gateside Bay and Sam's Point. 3rd place went to Ewan Clark (pictured on right) of Strathtyrum AC with 14 fish for 27lbs 5ozs. He got his fish at Tod Hole and was using a midge tip line with a Candy Floss Booby and buzzers. The heaviest fish of the day was 5lbs 11ozs, (capped at 4lbs) and was caught by Paul Cushnie of Leslie Llanilar AC. A total of 318 fish were landed by the 51 competitors for a total weight of 646lbs 15ozs, (including a number of Brown Trout). 26 anglers go forward to a semi-final. 30 anglers went out in the 3rd heat of the boat league on Wed 18th May and caught 115 fish. Top rod of the night was Jim McKinlay with 12 fish who caught his fish in International bay and the road shore using a FAB and clear buzzers on a floating line. He wins a £25 voucher from James Baynes Tackle shop in Callander. New to the league this year Steven Frances and George Charters they both caught 9 But Steven caught his first fish at 6.28 so he got 2nd. He wins a bottle of Whisky donated by Andy Smith of Southside Decorating. George chose a Lake of Menteith fisheries towel from our range of merchandise as his prize for coming 3rd. Steven joins Brian as joint leader.
