Caught on the one and only day that fishing for the species is allowed on the waterway due to the river having not yet reached its conservation limit, the fish was the prize of Dublin Salmon Anglers club member, Declan Briggs.
The capture was made as part of crucial scientific research carried out on the Liffey by Inland Fisheries Ireland that gives the Dublin Salmon Anglers special permission to fish the river for only one day per year – January 1 – in order gather data for scientific analysis.
Following the removal of a few scales, the salmon was released back into the water to continue its journey upstream.
"It was another remarkable day for the salmon rivers of Dublin" commented Dr Ciaran Byrne, CEO of Inland Fisheries Ireland on the capture, "Along with the discovery of Salmon in the River Tolka in 2011, now the River Liffey has produced the first Salmon of 2012".
Dr Ciaran also urged anglers to continue to support the conservation measures on the river and thanked the club for all their efforts to date.
