The huge fish was caught last Saturday (February 18) by Newport angler Mick Watts during a day of action that saw an impressive rod average of eight fish per angler record.
Caught from the Addington Road bank of the fishery, the chunky rainbow fell for a tungsten head black and green fritz.
“It was a stunning fish and by far the biggest we've ever seen caught on opening day,” Ringstead bailiff Paul Mortimer told Total Flyfisher. “It was one of over 1000 trout that were stocked last week, with a number of fish into double figures, including four specimens that totaled 60lb with the biggest over 17lb. Hopefully we'll see that big one come out a some point too.”
