Specimen is biggest from fishery for over five years.
A recent visit to Scotland’s Hopetoun fishery for angler Keith Guthrie was well worth the trip, after he banked this impressive 19lb 8oz rainbow.
The biggest fish to come from the West Lothian venue for over five years, Keith bagged his specimen after seeing it swim past his feet while at the bottom end of the fishery.
“I saw it cruise along the bank and could see how big I was, even in the water,” Keith told Total Fly Fisher. “I quickly cast out my fly in the direction I thought it would be swimming and boom, it took it on the drop. “
An adrenalin-filled fight ensued, with Keith taking 10minutes to coaxes the fish to the bank on a 4lb leader.
“It took an age to get it up to the surface, and when I did it leapt like a dolphin, spraying me and my friend on the bank next to me,” continued Keith. “I had a bit of a problem at the net as well as the fish was too big for the net. In the end I had to use the net to maneuver the fish close to the bank and lift it from the water from there.”
Having fallen for a self-tied Green Fritz presented on a 7/8 weight fast sinking line, unfortunately the fish had taken the fly down to its gut and so was dispatched.
