He said: “I fished a size 6 Dovey Black and Orange on the dropper and a 2in Black and Silver tube on the point. At 11.45pm the line went solid – I thought I’d snagged the riverbed, until it moved!
“The fish tore off and shot into the next pool. With 30 yards of backing line out it then started a cartwheeling display until my line went slack. I reeled in fast and furiously and it was still on. I followed the fish up the pool where, for the next 15 or so minutes, it gave an awesome acrobatic display coupled with searing runs.
Finally, I beached it, all 12lb of it. The fish fell for the Dovey Black and Orange.” Gwilym is a Hardy & Greys academy member.www.gwilymhughes.com
