Aims For UK's Best Fishery

New trout water opens to catches as owner plans to make it 'best in country'.

The owner of one of the UK’s premier commercial coarse fisheries has announced his intention to create ‘the best trout fishery in the UK’.

Boss of the Doncaster’s Lindholme Lakes, Neil Grantham, opened his new trout water to fly anglers just a few weeks ago, working on the premise of designing a fishery that would see even the most novice of anglers catch.

To this end the stocking programme on the 8acre lake has seen nearly 2000 brown, rainbow and blue trout introduced, with restocking carried out on a weekly basis.

It’s a policy that has already seen a staggering average return of 60 fish per day, with one angler reporting the capture of an arm-aching 84 fish in a single session on what has now got to be one of the easiest venues to catch trout on in the country.

“We used to have a trout water here and I always said that one day I’d open another one,” Neil, who is himself a keen fly angler, told total Flyfisher. “Quite a few other trout waters around the area have closed over the past few years so I felt the time was right, and the results have been great and exactly what I was after.

“The trout lake is the old Big Lake on the Lindholme complex which used to be stocked with carp. We removed all of them and set about building a water specifically for fly fishing. We’ve put in arms so that anglers will always have somewhere to cast with the wind at their back, so it’s perfect for beginners and even the guys who can’t cast very far are having a great time with lots of fish.”

With a minimum fish stock size of 2lb, the average size of the fish in the new water is also very healthy. Over 150 double figure fish to 15lb have been introduced and are coming out regularly.

“Just the other day one chap had three doubles in a morning, which is great fishing. The water in the lake is spring fed so it’s crystal clear so its also very exciting sport,” added Neil.

Feed back from anglers has already been very positive, with Neil announcing has further plans for the lake, including a game specific tackle shop and Fly lounge, coffee bar next to the lake set to open February next year. Planning permission has also been granted for a number of lodges to be built around the lake.

Prices for fishing at the venue are:

One fish limit, £15
Two fish , £20
Three fish limit, £25
All day tickets are catch and release after the bag limit is reached.
