Tom Moran - A Loss To Rod Building

Regarded by many as one of the finest makers of bamboo rods in the UK, Tom Moran has sadly passed away. An experienced and talented rod builder, Tom became obsessed with bamboo fly rod building in the 1970’s and was revered for producing very efficient compound tapers in cane. His trademarks include only using the best Tonkin cane and making all his components from scratch – including the famous hand-made Moran snake guides. Tom moved to the USA in 1992, where he teamed up with Tom Dorsey at Thomas & Thomas for three years.
“He was entirely committed to bamboo rod building and viewed it as his life’s purpose,” said Dorsey. “In this I felt I had met a kindred spirit.”
Moran returned to the UK in 1995, where he continued his passion of working with cane, bringing his considerable skill and expertise to Hardy’s of Alnwick, where he made great contributions to their bamboo heritage.
