Ronnie Gilbert Crowned 122nd Scottish National Champion

Ronnie Gilbert of Menteith Ospreys was crowned 122nd Scottish National Champion in the final of the 2014 Scottish National Trout Fly Fishing Championship, held recently on Lake of Menteith. In a close-fought contest with the top six being separated by only two fish and the next 20 being separated by only three fish: Gilbert finished as the top rod, thanks to his 16 trout for 34lb 15oz.
The championship, which was sponsored by Ridgeline UK and Glen Garioch, is fished on a partial catch-and-release basis throughout with the first three fish being retained and a weight allowance being awarded for each fish returned thereafter.
This year’s event saw 60 competitors in the final, and a total of 476 fish caught during the eight-hour session.
The runner-up on the day was Paul Garner of Alba Orvis FF with 16 fish for 32lb 12.2oz and Campbell Morgan of Strathleven FF claimed the third place with 14 fish for 29lb 13.8oz
There was also a prize for the heaviest fish of the day: a 7lb 8.4oz specimen caught by Tom McBride of Good Companions AC.
The Championship, which included 10 preliminary heats and a total of 381 competitors from the Borders to Shetland, doubles as the qualifier for the 2015 loch teams with the top 21 anglers chosen to represent Scotland at the Home Countries Loch Internationals, which are being held at Rutland Water and the Lake of Menteith.
