Dogs, tasks and squirrels but no fishing!
Returned from the deepest depths of the New Forest to the murk and cold of the flat fen landscape. Our Boxer hates it! The New Forest offers him the enticing challenge to chase squirrels endlessly up trees. But the only enticement the fens have to offer an energetic dog is some skanky rabbits and the odd pheasant or two. And, as he is constantly reminding us, he’s not had flying lessons so therefore is at a major disadvantage over his feathered friends.

Trout fishing was at a minimum over the weekend at our holiday home. Actually it was non-existent as ‘tasks’ appeared to be the only items on the wife’s agenda. So unfortunately my leisure and pleasure day at Woodington Trout Fishery was sadly demoted to clearing oak leaves from gutters. Lovely!

On my return I had an interesting email from Rob Waddington at Rutland Fly Fishing Adventures. He sent me a link to a listing he has posted on YouTube featuring some of the pictures I had done with him during the summer. He has very cleverly put them together with animation and music. Worth a quick look if you’ve got a couple of spare minutes: http://youtu.be/l6UtEoOtVN4

Fishing could be scarce this week unless I can slip away for an afternoon without being missed. The ‘Bloody Red Shrimp’ are still the main source of food around the draw-off tower on Rutland’s North Arm. Don’t forget the boats come off the reservoir this Sunday the 27 November so if you want a chuck at the North Arm ‘shrimpers’ or some of the big fry feeders around the Sailing Club you’d better be a bit sharpish. Floating Fry on a floating line is the method of attack. However, if it’s bank fishing floats your boat, if you see what I mean, my mate Jamie Weston from River Gwash Fish Farm, took a good five and a half-pounder from the bank at Sykes Lane during the week caught on a Suspender Minky.

It will be sad to say goodbye this week to the long-serving Kay Mains, the retail assistant at Pitsford Water. Senior Warden Nathan Clayton will be leading the official cheerio’s on Sunday afternoon at the fishing lodge.

Is it just me or are Coldplay morphing into Dunfermline’s Scottish rockers Big Country? Chris Martin and friends latest offering Mylo Xyloto distinctly reminds me of some of the tunes released by Big Country on their album ‘The Crossing’ in 1983. It’s probably just an age thing.
